For this year's TEDxGlasgow, we were given the responsibility to design the stage (and spaces) where the inspirational speakers would be sharing their stories, experiences and insights on the chosen theme, Lead or Follow. This years TEDxGlasgow was hosted in the SEC Armadillo, with a 1800 guests attending the event.
LEAD OR FOLLOW
The concept for the year was Lead or Follow, which is very abstract and open. The lead of graphic design, Andrew Hamilton, interpreted this by creating designs with birds flying in formation for the overall brand. This led to us and our colleague Sam Frew, a local interior designer, conjuring up the concept of murmuration (the swarming of animals), but we focused solely on swallows which form swirls and organic shapes in the sky.
FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY: SET UP DAY
After months of sketching and evolving our designs, we came up with a final concept which used 2 main materials; black polyprop for the stage installations and transparent acrylic for the reception sculptural display. The installations were produced in collaboration with ICL Tech, a plastics specialist company that worked with us to physically make our designs with the method of laser cut.
It took us a full day to set everything up. We designed and planned everything beforehand - probably a month in advance - to be sure that materials produced and equipment could be set up relatively easily the day before the big event (Thanks to Nik Fadzreen Hani, Paul Weir and Zoe Mercer for lending your helpful hands for the day!).
TEDxGLASGOW: EVENT DAY
The installation for the stage and reception definitely looked awesome on the event day! It framed the presenters perfectly on stage and the sculptural installation in the reception gained a lot of attention as the 1800 guest entered the building. Was very happy to see everything in place! The speakers were also amazing and the team behind TEDxGlasgow were incredible for pulling everything together with such high standards and level of professionalism. Proud to be a part of the team!
TEDxGlasgow was a great event to be a part of and the team were amazing to work with. We're proud to see what we've created for this year and look forward to many years of TED Talks to come!
